The Inaugural Garden

The Inaugural Garden
April 22, 2019 by David Thompson

I first got a message from Carolina Centano about wanting a garden in the front of her house back last October. I sat on the request for the rest of fall. I liked that it was a front yard but I had no idea where in town it was. I contacted her in March and I came out and inspected the site. What she wanted was a garden built in the parkway, the space between the sidewalk and the curb. It was in the heart of the Hilltop neighborhood and across the street from the Tacoma Community House. The perfect location for our first garden.

The next thing I did was call 811, call before you dig, just to make sure there was no surprises. Good thing I did, there was a 6″ gas main running down the parkway. I had the gas pipe marked along with a water line. Always call before you dig. Next I created a event on Facebook and began to promote it. Before I knew it there was over 300 people interested and 27 going. There was no way I would have enough tools for all those people. The response was rather overwhelming. As the event day neared the rain began to fall. But there was going to be one dry day before the event, unfortunately that days was the day before the event. The morning of the event it was raining steadily. I figured that 27 people weren’t going to show up but 6 hearty souls did. It was the perfect amount of people. We worked great together and in 3 hours the garden was finished.
